Pastel conch houses and palm trees on a Key West street at golden hour

What to Wear in Key West

Key West is the rare place where overdressing is the fashion mistake. This is a town where million-dollar sailboat owners wear twenty-year-old t-shirts, where "business casual" means a clean camp shirt, and where the only people in long pants in July are the ones who didn't read a guide like this one.

Here's how to dress like you belong at Mile Zero.

The Key West uniform

For men, the daily formula is simple: a breathable short-sleeve button-up, quick-dry shorts, and sandals or boat shoes. The button-up matters more than you'd think — Key West is casual, but it's put-together casual. A camp collar shirt with a subtle print (like our Sandy Keys camp shirt, which practically has this town in its DNA) works from breakfast at Blue Heaven through sunset at Mallory Square without a single change.

For women, sundresses and linen sets rule the day, with a swimsuit underneath more often than not — spontaneous pool stops are a Key West feature, not a bug.

What the weather actually does

Winter (December–February)

The sweet spot. Days in the upper 70s, low humidity, cool-ish evenings. Bring one light layer for dinner on the water — a breeze off the Gulf can surprise you. Everything else stays summer-weight.

Spring and fall

Warm, occasionally sticky, perfect. This is prime camp-shirt-and-shorts weather with zero adjustments needed.

Summer (June–September)

Hot, humid, with a 4pm rain shower you can set your watch to. Natural, breathable fabrics are non-negotiable — anything clingy becomes a regret by 11am. The rain passes in twenty minutes; nobody carries an umbrella.

Dressing for the big three

  • Duval Street at night: The nicest anyone gets. A fresh camp shirt, clean shorts or chinos, real sandals. You'll be better dressed than half the bar and exactly as comfortable.
  • On the water: Swim trunks that double as shorts, a shirt you don't mind getting salt spray on, polarized sunglasses with a strap. Boat captains have seen a thousand hats fly away; don't donate yours.
  • Mallory Square sunset: Whatever you wore all day works. That's the point of this town.

The pack list

  1. 3–4 breathable button-ups or tees
  2. 2–3 pairs of shorts (at least one quick-dry)
  3. 2 swimsuits
  4. 1 light evening layer (winter trips)
  5. Sandals + one closed-toe pair for boat decks
  6. Sunglasses, reef-safe sunscreen, and a hat that ties down

The whole philosophy in one line: dress like you have nowhere to be, in clothes that look like you chose them carefully. Browse the men's collection for the shirts that do exactly that, or start from the top at Kimara Coast.
